Still growing after all this time

For years, the DeMarco name has been synonymous with quality lawn care and landscaping, with the family-owned business personally being responsible for the planning and maintenance of many area homes and businesses.

Now celebrating more than 50 years in business, DeMarco's Nursery has grown steadily over the years, expanding its services and still offering the same quality and personal attention that has made it one of the Connellsville area's finest nurseries.

"We have a lot of faithful customers," Lee DeMarco said. "We have generations of families. We'll have worked on someone's yard for years and then have the children come to us later, too. We really appreciate the loyalty of the people from the area."

DeMarco's Nursery was founded by brothers Charles "Chuggie" and Frances "Franny" DeMarco more than 50 years ago.

Eight candidates to attend Orangeburg debate

ORANGEBURG, SC - Plans for the April 26th Democratic presidential debate are being finalized. The debate will be held at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg.

The state Democratic party says all eight candidates vying for the nomination will be there. That includes two of the lesser known candidates, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich and former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel.

Meantime, Orangeburg is finishing up preparations on issues like traffic and security. Then there's SC State, getting ready to host the event.

"The campus is getting a face-lift," said an SC State official. "There are a lot of landscaping projects, and we're renovating MLK Center for the debate. I suspect the week of the debate, you'll see a very different campus."

Gardening service for all jobs

TRULY Welgemoed always had a passion for gardening when she was growing up and later turned it into a career.

Ms Welgemoed has opened a new gardening service on the Border and says no job is too big or too small.

She recently relocated from the Dandenongs in Victoria, where she ran a successful gardening business for 12 years and which she sold before moving to Albury-Wodonga.

"I think this area has so much potential and I am looking forward to establishing a busy gardening service like I did in the Dandenongs," she said.

Ms Welgemoed will service all properties from small domestic blocks to large lifestyle properties with acreage.

"I have vast experience preparing properties for sale and all aspects of rental maintenance and I have managed wedding reception gardens, commercial properties and bed and breakfast landscaping," she said.

County approves permit for ministorage

A conditional-use permit allowing construction of a ministorage facility west of Lawrence was approved Wednesday by the Douglas County Commission.

The permit was sought by Souvenirs LLC, which owns the proposed storage site at the northwest corner of North 1415 and East 900 roads, near what is commonly called “Judy's Junction." It is near the former Clinton Cove convenience store.

Tim Herndon, a representative of Landplan Engineering who worked with the landowner in planning the development, asked commissioners to reduce the amount of landscaping the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission recommended as screening for the site.

Commissioners noted that while the Planning Commission is an advisory board, the landscaping requirement was approved in a 10-0 vote.
