Brothers in arms make for loaded drama

Landscape with Weapon doesn't offer much in the way of ethical discussion: the dice are too loaded and the central supposition too feeble. A weapons engineer (excellent, rumpled Tom Hollander) has an attack of conscience on discovering that he can't control his own invention, which might be used to kill in an unjust cause - might, in fact, be used as a weapon. Still, Penhall isn't aiming to supply a theatrical version of The Moral Maze. He takes the audience into a hermetically sealed world: repellent, threatening, fascinating. The creator's obsession with his product - whose form is inspired by Islamic geometric art - is echoed throughout William Dudley's clever design, which has drawings of drones on the floor, and a ceiling rose that can turn into an armoured disc.

Hollander gives an extraordinary portrait of myopic preoccupation - he's like a rumpled seven-year-old at Legoland - and subsequent unravelling.

Pot farmer pleads guilty; Two others with him were acquitted

An illegal gardening adventure resulted in the conviction Thursday of one of three Lambton County men charged with possession of marijuana.

Jonathan Hooks, 21, had pleaded guilty to possession of 26 small marijuana plants and some packaged marijuana. The plants were found during a July 25, 2006 police search of a vehicle on a Warwick Township gravel road.

"There's no doubt that Hooks was going out to plant the marijuana," said Justice R.G. Hunter.

Two other occupants of the vehicle were acquitted because their denials of any knowledge of the plants raised a reasonable doubt about their guilt.

The plants were potted in paper cups and small flower pots that were in a beer case and two plastic bags. .

Baseball: Branjord gives back to Stillwater baseball

Stillwater senior Nick Branjord has been involved with the Scouts since second grade. His baseball career started even before that, so it seemed like a natural fit when he decided to complete a landscaping project at the Stillwater Area High School baseball field as part of his Eagle Scout Service Project. With help from friends, family and numerous area businesses, Branjord installed a retaining wall, planted some trees and added rocks under the bleachers to stop the erosion. In addition to being an eye sore, the floating cement slab featured many jagged edges and the area behind the bleachers also turned into a sloppy mess after it rained. The project also included the installation of two signs which showcase many of the top teams and players in the history of Stillwater baseball.Branjord, who received word on March 28 that he had become an Eagle Scout, completed the project last fall."Basically, when I got to that point in my scouting career I knew I wanted to do it for (Stillwater coach) Ricky Michel because of all the stuff he's given to the community," Branjord said.

Out West, the Great American Landscape

The exhibition, called "Out West, the Great American Landscape" looks at the American West as represented by contemporary American art. This includes over sixty paintings, landscape photography from National Geographic magazine, and the posters of old western movies.

In the dim light, the posters - often frames lifted from the black and white originals and colored by hand - exude a deep sense of nostalgia. In fact the American West has always been a land of dreams. Its portrayal as a "promised land" to the early settler-pioneers was one of the founding myths of American culture.

Street's image may get revamp

BELLFLOWER - A dinner rejection was Chrissy Padilla's first taste of how some outsiders view her Eucalyptus Avenue neighborhood.

The friend Padilla recently invited to her two-bedroom rental on Eucalyptus declined after finding out Padilla lived in the "bad part" of town.

Upset as she was, Padilla couldn't blame her.

"Part of me was like, `Oh! How mean!"' said Padilla, who moved to Eucalyptus last November. "But then I realized, `Hey, like, that was me a couple of months before I moved here. That .
