Students Learn Principles of Landscaping in Alabama

Students from high schools throughout the county come together each day at Marshall Technical School in Guntersville, Ala., to learn skills for the future. One class is preparing for careers in landscaping and sports turf management.

It teaches job skills. All of those students will be able to work anywhere dealing with landscaping and sports turf management, said Cindy Wigley, career technical director for Marshall County Schools and principal of Marshall Technical School.

You have both ends of the spectrum. There are students who want to go into management in these fields, but there are some who just want skills to work.

The landscaping/sports turf management class has many components, so the students learn a wide range of skills and get a better idea about what they would like to do after high school.

Family fun night at Gawler Cup

A great family night of entertainment will feature at Gawler Landscaping Supplies Sportspark this Friday night (April 13) as the Gawler Harness Racing Club hosts the 2007 Carlton–Fosters Group Gawler Cup.

The 2007 edition of Cup night is once again a major part of the Steinborner Holden Gawler Horse Festival (see page 25).

A top group of the state's best horses will compete for the $8000 purse on Friday night, with many performing well in lead-up races over last weekend.

Nicky Anvil was back to his front-running best at Globe Derby on Saturday night, before two other possible Gawler Cup chances, Time Is Ticking and Nutfield, battled out the claimer later in the night.

On Sunday night at the same track, Sunrise Music Man handled the stand start perfectly in the Strathalbyn Cup and collected the silverware with a comfortable win.

New diving board for Aquatic Park

This summer, the Shakopee Aquatic Park will have a new diving board, in addition to a different park building.

The city council voted earlier this month to replace the old board, whose slip-resistant surface has worn off. It also has signs of aging on the support structure and rails.

Shakopee recreation supervisor Travis Karlen, who is in charge of the project, said he's not sure when the current board was installed, but it's past its life expectancy.

The project will cost the city $12,816, which will be paid through a fund balance in the recreation fund. In 2006, the center collected more money than expected due to expanded fitness offerings and healthcare reimbursement programs.

Olympic Pools will begin removing the aquatic park's old board soon and should be finished in a few weeks, Karlen said.

DPS to tow vehicles in Williams' Bakery lot

The Department of Public Safety will tow all vehicles parked at the former Williams' Bakery site near the University's 13th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard entrance starting Monday morning around midnight, DPS announced Thursday.

DPS wants to close the gravel lot temporarily to enhance the lot and enforce parking rules.

"This place is a zoo," said Ken Boegli, DPS parking and transportation manager, pointing to vehicles lined along a fence at the site Thursday afternoon. Some vehicles were parked behind others, and vehicles in some rows weren't even with each other. Cars were parked in potholes.

"This lot isn't up to our standards right now," Boegli said. "In order to fix the lot, we have to get all these cars out."

DPS wants to add striping, signs, landscaping and lighting.
