| Netsky still dominates malware landscape
Although protection has been available for more than three years, the Netsky family of worms still accounted for almost a third of all malware detected during the month of March, 2007. According to Sophos, the Netsky family had the biggest impact on computer users last month. Interestingly, just 0.18 percent or one in 555 emails was infected in March, yet Sophos detected 8,835 new threats, bringing the total to 231,548. Sophos senior security consultant, Carole Theriault, said these numbers indicate that while malware spreading via e-mail is still causing trouble, the vectors used to distribute threats are changing. "Hackers are continuing their move away from mass-mailing worms in favor of using spam messages with links pointing to infected Web pages," she said.
EMU's Extensive Landscaping Project
Landscaping work at the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) Student Center in Ypsilanti, which was recently completed, was extensive. The landscaping project covered approximately 8-1/2 acres. "There are a lot of trees and shrubs. There is a wildflower or natural area that we also did, along with the sodding and seeding on the project," Merrill Bumstead, project manager for Margolis Nursery, Inc., of Superior Township, said. Margolis Nursery was the landscaping contractor for the project. Brick pavers were also part of the project, along with an extensive irrigation system. An automatic irrigation system was installed for the entire site. Michigan Automatic Sprinklers, of Commerce Township, was the irrigation subcontractor for the project. The landscaping work took approximately three months to complete.
Gardening: inspiration and advice
The word "garden" derives from the Latin word for yard. It is the notion of enclosed space that is key to its meaning, more than what is planted there, be it fruit, vegetables, flowers, trees or sculpture. 1001 Gardens You Must See Before You Die takes the broadest view of the word garden and combs the world for the most inspiring, the grandest, the most unusual varieties. It is a sprawling garden of a garden book. All the expected worldly wonders are here: Giverny, Kew, Boboli, the gardens of the Taj Mahal, and Gatchina, the famous Leningrad garden of Catherine the Great's son, Emperor Paul I. But the surprises far outnumber the familiar. There's the garden Goethe designed in Thuringen, Germany, and the lost gardens of Helligan, restored and written about so elegantly by Tim Smit.
Pool resources for landscaping
The reward of age and success is a swimming pool. When I downsized, my smaller Palm Springs, Calif., hideaway was complemented by a beautiful turquoise pool. But otherwise this yard was a blank slate, the water surrounded by nothing but concrete and gravel. This barren landscape was no doubt to ensure the water remained litter free. Now, five years later, it is a tropical paradise filled with palms and trumpet vines and blooming flowers. The pool looks a thousand times more beautiful with this framework of lush greenery. When landscaping this house, I took into consideration the primary issues I've shared with my pool-owning clients for years. In fact, the same applies if you have a spa or even a fountain that must also be well maintained. First of all, I considered the direction of the prevailing wind because that is where most of the flying litter will originate.
