Tokasa makes gardens glow

ONE of nature's beauty that catches the eye of visitors when sailing towards Also Island, in the Northern Division, is the beautiful gardens on the hills there.

On closer approach, one can only admire the way the leaves of coconut trees sway to the rhythm of the wind, casting shadows over a garden of roses and bright flowers.

And the hands behind the gorgeous garden belong to a villager who has been responsible for the Also Island compound for more then two years.

Since 2004, Tokasa Rabuka has been employed as a gardener for an American couple Jim and Kyoko Bandy who now lease the island.

Tokasa, who is from the chiefly family of Cawaro Village on Udu Point, helped the couple secure the lease to the island by talking to the late chief, (her older brother) to give the island to the couple.

Ford Motor Company outlines its top 10 green initiatives

In recognition of Earth Day, April 22, Ford created a Top Ten list that focuses on some of its latest green initiatives. Fords comprehensive global sustainability strategy includes a focus on the development of environmentally friendly vehicle technologies, including hybrids, diesels, bio-diesels, advanced engines and transmissions, E85 ethanol, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen internal combustion engines and fuel cells. In addition, Ford is introducing sustainable efforts throughout the company in manufacturing, materials and facilities management.

Fords commitment to green vehicle technologies will result in improved fuel economy for its customers and reduced CO 2 emissions. Other green efforts will help it minimize its environmental impact through the conservation of energy and a reduction in pollution, while saving the company and customers money.

Landscaping works wonders for privacy, beauty

Editor's note: Robert Bruss is temporarily away. The following column from Bruss' "Best of" collection first appeared Sunday, March 12, 2006.

In their unique book, "Outside the Not So Big House; Creating the Landscape of Home," best-seller author Sarah Susanka and noted landscape designer Julie Moir Messervy team up to show landscape ideas for "completing" modest-sized homes. Along the way, they share the benefits of sound landscape techniques to create enjoyable outdoor spaces that are both attractive and practical.

A special feature is the authors explain how they created the landscaping, often to meet the special requests of the homeowners. In other homes, Susanka and Messervy share how they combine landscape methods to accomplish a goal.
