Warm Weather To Greet Flower & Garden Festival

Downtown Leesburg will be transformed into a five-block garden Saturday and Sunday for the 17th rendition of the Leesburg Flower & Garden Festival. The popular garden event has become a top regional draw, pulling about 30,000 visitors to Leesburg during the two-day event. The exhibit is located in the setting of historic Leesburg, which, to many visitors, adds to the allure of the event. Warming weather, with temperatures predicted to reach into the 70s, is expected to add to the garden atmosphere this year.Visitors and vendors alike tend to characterize the festival as a "fun show," in part because of its relaxed pace as buyers wander in and out of the various exhibits and vendor booths, stopping off every now and then to grab a bite to eat from the many and diverse food vendors as well as rest their feet and listen to some great musical entertainment. For those new to the show, there will be a plethora of garden products-landscape displays, trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, vines and herbs-as well as garden equipment, tools, statuary and furniture, watering systems, birdhouses and garden art.

Gardeners swap plants and stories at event

Marietta Garden Club members swapped plants Thursday, along with stories about an old friend remembered for her knowledge and love of nature.

Mary Yost passed away Dec. 11, 2005, at the age of 86, taking with her an indispensable amount of knowledge about plant life in Washington County, said her garden club friends. Thursday, they dedicated a spice bush to her memory in Sacra Via Park.

She was like a naturalist; she could identify everything, said Marietta Garden Club president Judy Segall.

Two of Yosts sons, Jean Yost and Linn Yost, and his wife Betty, all of Barlow, were present for the dedication.

I think its great, Linn Yost said of the memorial plaque laid at the base of the spice bush with his mothers name on it.

Yost was remembered as a longtime member of the club and an integral part of creating the nature walking path behind the Washington County Career Center.

Forgotten talent

A FEW months ago a painting by Dame Laura Knight, Storm over our town, Malvern in a thunderstorm, reached a record price in a local auction.

It seems until then, Dame Laura's brilliance as a British painter and, in particular, the time she spent in Malvern, had largely been forgotten.

Apart from a painting in the Worcester Museum and Art Gallery, The Yellow Dress, there seems little to celebrate the artistic contribution she made to the county, to the celebration of our landscape and the recording of country crafts and craftsmen.
