Painter took nature's scenic route and returned to his Jersey roots

Before he became an international art icon who changed the American cultural landscape by painting its natural landscape, Asher B. Durand was a boy who explored nature in the fields and woods around his family farm on Orange Mountain, in a place called Jefferson Village, now known as Maplewood.

He loved the place so much, he came back to live out his years, and built an estate-size home on the exact site he was born, and died there in 1886 at age 90.

This was after a life as a world-renowned engraver and painter, a stanchion of the New York artistic and intellectual community and the acknowledged leading figure in the first uniquely American art movement.

So while Asher B. Durand was a New Yorker by reputation, he was a Jerseyan, beginning to end.

Add crape myrtles to your landscaping

Georgia, too, has this beauty we now see. Only they are one up on us! Having lived there for numerous years, I can attest to the wonder of color they have, in spring, which leads directly into their summer. And they have this beautiful color all summer long, just like we have now. It’s simple: crape myrtles.

They bloom profusely in the exact range of colors you see all over Fayetteville this spring season. White, pink, fuchsia, light red and lavender!

They are meant to be a small tree; however, with trimming, you can control them into a bush form, if you prefer. Once established, after watering the first year, they are drought-tolerant.

The more water, the more blooms, however. They grow in any soil, sandy or otherwise, just like azaleas.
